Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why doesn’t CBJ add more boat ramps? Why not add 2 double-lane boat ramps (4 launch areas) instead of just one double-lane ramp (2 launch areas)?
    Answer:
Each launch lane (or each individual boat launch) requires onsite parking for 50 boat-trailer spaces; the proposed project would therefore require 100 parking spaces (for boat-trailers) (105 are proposed).  Four launch lanes would require onsite parking for 200 boat trailers.  Adding four lanes would increase the footprint of the development area thereby impacting other proposed developments such as the commercial loading float or Bay Creek.
  1. There were numerous comments suggested uses of the current boat yard for parking (instead of retail OR boat yard)

    Answer:
The CBJ Docks and Harbor Department and PND Engineers will examine other possibilities for this area such as additional parking capacity.
  1. Why not move the kayak launch to the western-most point so that the Auke Bay Tower Condo community has a nicer view?

    Answer:
Maintaining the kayak launch at the existing boat ramp would enable the kayaks to continue traveling under the gangway along the east portion of the harbor, thereby avoiding the majority of motor boat traffic and providing a safer route for kayakers.
  1. Why not switch the proposed two-lane boat ramp with the proposed commercial loading float?

    Answer:
The design team is trying to utilize the existing dredged area in the vicinity of DeHarts Marina for the moorage basin for the commercial float to minimize dredging impacts and costs.  If the proposed boat ramp were to move to that location, then the existing basin would need to be filled, and considerably more dredging would be required along Bay Creek to create a suitable basin for the float.
  1. There were numerous comments regarding the boat yard.

Answer: A Comments in favor of keeping the boat yard at Statter Harbor and comments in favor of moving the boat yard operations to Auke Nu Cove were relatively equal.  The CBJ is considering both options.
  1. Can some of the trailer stalls be utilized for boat storage during winter months?

    Answer:
The CBJ may consider leasing portions of the parking lot for use as a boat storage/work yard area during winter months, similar to the current boat yard/work area lease situation currently in place.
  1. Why not move the restroom closer to the boat launch and not along side the highway?

Answer: The CBJ Docks and Harbor Department and PND Engineers will look at other locations for the restrooms so that they will be accessible for users.
